Tony Gwynn Named to California Hall of Fame
Tony Gwynn is one of the eight men and women who will be honored at a Nov. 30 event.
The 10th class of California Hall of Fame inductees also includes actors Harrison Ford and George Takei, artist Corita Kent, author Isabel Allende, former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry, former California First Lady Maria Shriver and Tower Records founder Russ Solomon.
The state’s Hall of Fame was established in 2006. Since then, 96 men and women have been inducted by the museum.
Gwynn is the second Aztec to receive the honor. In 2015, NASA’s Johnson Space Center Director and astronaut Ellen Ochoa (’80) was a member of the 9th class of inductees.
Gwynn was a star baseball and basketball player as a student at SDSU. He went on to play his entire professional baseball career with the San Diego Padres, establishing records, garnering numerous awards, and earning All-Star status and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
After retiring as a player, Gwynn coached the Aztec baseball team for 12 seasons until his death June 16, 2014 at the age of 54. His SDSU baseball jersey was retired at a February 2015 ceremony in the stadium that bears his name.
