Recreation facilities and programming at a university do more than provide leisure opportunities for the campus.  These facilities and programs can play a role in the recruitment, engagement and retention of students by giving them opportunities to interact across disciplines, foster a sense of belonging, and provide shared experiences to help build and shape community.

San Diego State University recently introduced its newest recreation facility addition to campus, the Recreation Field, which is located north of parking structure 12. The project, which was funded by Associated Students, was completed in August 2016. The Recreation Field is available for daily drop-in play and will also host recreational sports and fitness activities, including intramural sports leagues, sport clubs and fitness classes.

Close to 8,000 intramural sports program participants played a variety of sports last year, including soccer and flag football. Additionally, there were nearly 800 student-athletes in the collegiate sport club program. The sport clubs represent SDSU nationally by competing in leagues and tournaments. These sports include men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and rugby.

“Demand for recreation programming from SDSU students is at an all-time high,” said Aztec Recreation Director Mark Zakrzewski. “It’s wonderful to see so many students leading active, healthy lifestyles. They have high expectations for having quality recreation facilities on campus. The new field will allow us to expand and enhance programs such as intramural sports leagues, sport clubs, fitness classes and drop-in recreation opportunities.”

This new 64,600 square-foot field features state-of-the art turf and lighting systems. The latest in AstroTurf technology offers excellent shock reduction, lowered temperatures and requires no water, which saves an estimated one million gallons of water per year. The LED lighting is high efficiency, low power and minimizes light spill into the surrounding areas. The lighting used on the Recreation Field also uses 60 percent less energy than traditional Metal Halide field lighting, according to Glen Brandenburg, A.S. facilities and sustainability director.

The campus community is invited to visit the new facility and take advantage of recreation activities. Drop-in recreation hours are posted on the Aztec Recreation website at arc.sdsu.edu/hours
