Eight Aztecs Receive Prestigious CSU Scholarship
The Sally Casanova Scholars will receive $3,000 to support their doctoral aspirations.
Each of the honorees receives a $3,000 scholarship, which is intended to help students explore and prepare for doctoral programs.
“This is a prestigious scholarship that is available to undergraduate juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students who have aspirations to teach or conduct research at the university level,” said Cristina Sanchez, coordinator of Graduate Programs and Evaluations. “The scholarship provides funding for visits to doctoral granting institutions and helps scholars pay for application fees and entrance exams required for their Ph.D. programs.”
Each scholarship winner is working with an SDSU faculty member to develop their educational goals. This year’s SDSU Sally Casanova Scholars and their mentors are:

SDSU’s eight honorees are among 74 Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholars for 2016-17. The Pre-Doctoral Program Advisory Committee selected the scholarship winners from a pool of more than 200 applicants across the CSU system.
The scholarship is named for Sally Casanova, who founded the Pre-Doctoral Scholar Program in 1989 to increase diversity within the pool of university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of students in the CSU system.
The CSU will open the online application for the 2017-18 Sally Casanova Scholar program in early December.
