The Jane K. Smith Cap & Gown Chapter of Mortar Board at San Diego State University recently recognized several members of the SDSU community who have made significant contributions to the education and academic achievement of their chapter. The national honor society for college seniors hosted the 27th annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner on Nov. 10 at Templo Mayor in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

Mortar Board members select honorees who represent the ideals upon which honor society is based, including superior scholastic achievement, outstanding leadership and dedicated service.

Zachary Maches, acting president, and Emily Van Etten, executive vice president, chaired the event. Special guests in attendance included Academic Affairs - Student Achievement Associate Vice President Norah Shultz, Ian Neel, Darlene Davies, alumni board members, and advisers Cassie Neel, Randi McKenzie and Jane K. Smith.

Van Etten presented the Dr. Henry L. Janssen Award to Brenda Chiuminatta, a Temecula Valley High School teacher who teaches college readiness classes. The award was established in 2006 to honor teachers and counselors in the K-12 system who successfully instill the values of Mortar Board in their students.

The Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society recently recognized the SDSU chapter as one of the best in the nation.

A highlight of the event was the greeting the group received from Shultz, who joined SDSU during the summer. She stated she has already come to recognize the importance of Mortar Board to SDSU in the short time she has been with the university.

"I am glad to be here to recognize the members of Mortar Board who will be graduating in December," Shultz said during the event. "This night recognizes the people who have connected with those students – the teachers, the faculty, the staff. I am so pleased that we have a venue to honor them.”
