Private Space for Mothers
Breastfeeding students and employees can access lactation stations on campus.
Lucy Verdin, the administrative supervisor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, has worked with the women using these spaces and has seen the impact these spaces have had.
“Being a mother and going to school is hard," said Verdin. "These women need a place to pump their milk. They’re students on schedules, and having a private space on campus is really helpful to them."
One lactation space is located in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, located in Room 370A on the third floor inside the Harvey Goodfield Lounge, and is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. This particular station uses a schedule with reserved time slots for women.
The other two spaces on campus are first come, first served.
A second space is located at the Women’s Resource Center, which is located at 5121 Campanile Drive. It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The third space is in Room 443 of the Love Library and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
“Mothers come in with their pumps and all of their books. I can see that they’re stressed out, and being able to provide a space for them with a quick turn-around time makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something,” said Verdin, “I enjoy working with all of the mothers who come in.”
In order to access the lactation spaces, students are encouraged to fill out the online registration form. Once that is completed, your red ID will be activated within 3-5 days, making these spaces accessible.
