The San Diego State University Pre-Dental Organization provides students with insight into the field of dentistry and opportunities related to the dental field, including volunteer work in the community.

The student organization regularly tours dental schools in California, educates elementary school children on the importance of oral hygiene and takes part in workshops.

The organization’s president, Alexa Fishman, says she has been interested in the field of dentistry since high school and was very excited to see there was an organization on campus specifically focused on dentistry. She says it is exciting to share in the organization’s passion and directly impact the community.

Is the Pre-Dental Organization open to all majors or is it major specific?

The organization is open to all majors.

When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?

We’re looking for students interested in the dental field. Anyone who is interested is welcome. When dentists speak to our organization or preventative dentistry class, we are often told dentists are life-long learners. This is the quality we try to embody: the desire to always learn more.

When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?

Meetings are biweekly on Mondays. Membership fees are $15 for returning members and $20 for new members. Our last meeting is Dec. 5 in the Calpulli Center on the fourth floor in Conference Room 3.

Does your organization have any events coming up?

We have a fundraiser on Dec. 5 at Chipotle in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. Come and support our organization.

How can students find more information about your organization?

To learn more, come to the Health Professions Advising Office in the Geology, Mathematics, and Computer Science building, Room 323.

What kind of activities does your organization plan/attend?

We educate oral hygiene to elementary school students and work to improve our community in other areas as well. We volunteer at the San Diego Rescue Mission biweekly and the San Diego Food Bank weekly. We also tour dental schools across California and even out of state.

Which SDSU faculty has had an impact on your organization?

Gwendolyn Hill, the director of the Health Professions Advising Office, has had a big impact on our organization. We are constantly striving to improve and Gwen has always been our No. 1 fan. We appreciate her so much.
