Aztecs Out in Business is a San Diego State University student organization connecting students identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) to resources in the local business community.

Through the organization, members have the opportunity to take part in workshops, social events and networking.

The organization’s founder and president Alex Henriques da Silva B. said she founded the organization to create a space for LGBTQ students interested in business careers and to connect them with resources and employers who are specifically looking for top-performing students with diverse backgrounds.

“The feeling of helping others realize and leverage their potential for professional development as LGBTQ students is extremely satisfying,” she said. “I believe SDSU seriously aims to create growth for every single student on this campus and we’re grateful to be a part of that experience.”

Is Aztecs Out in Business open to all majors or is it major specific?

We’re open to all majors.

When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?

We’re specifically looking for LGBTQ students who are business, economics, computer science, math, or graphic design majors, or anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in business.

When are your meetings?

Our meetings are from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Visionary Suite on the third floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

How can students find more information about your organization?

Students can follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We are also working on creating a website this semester.

What kind of activities does your organization plan and attend?

Our main focus is to host events with LGBTQ speakers who can share their experiences of being their whole, authentic self at work, and how that is beneficial to career success. We also host workshops on inclusivity and LGBTQ rights in the workplace, social events and preparing for LGBTQ business conferences. The next event we have on our calendar is a workshop we are co-hosting with SDSU Career Services titled "Career Opportunities for Business Majors." The workshop takes place on April 5 in the Templo Mayor room inside the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

What impact have SDSU faculty made on your organization?

I don’t know how to thank Tita Gray enough for encouraging me to move forward with the creation of Aztecs Out in Business and constantly supporting our team throughout the process. She’s an inspiration and an invaluable asset to this campus.
