SDSU Men's Club Volleyball Wins National Championship
SDSU defeated Ohio State University to capture the NCVF Division I National Championship.
“Out of 144 teams in the nation, winning the NCVF championship is unbelievable,” said SDSU senior defensive specialist/libero Davidson Borgmeyer. “It’s such a rewarding experience after putting in so much work, the hours at practice, the team bonding, and building a program for the past few years. It has really paid off.”
SDSU finished the tournament with a 7-2 record, defeating fourth-seeded Wisconsin A in three sets (25-18, 17-25, 16-14) in the quarterfinals and Purdue A in three sets (21-25, 26-24, 15-11) in the semifinal round to reach the title match. SDSU outside hitter Andrew Freiha was named the most valuable player of the tournament, while outside hitter Alec Tollgaard was named to the all-tournament first team.
“Andrew’s talent helped make plays and pull us through some tough games, but his leadership, experience, and presence proved to be pivotal to the team, not only on the court but off the court as well,” Borgmeyer said.
Ohio State, which was undefeated heading into the final against SDSU, finished with an 8-1 overall record. The Buckeyes defeated three-time defending champion and second-seeded Wisconsin-Oshkosh in three sets (25-20, 15-25, 15-12) in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Marquette A in three sets (17-25, 26-24, 16-14) in the semifinals to land a spot in the championship match.
