The San Diego State University Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a pre-professional student organization with the goal of connecting human resource management students and professionals.

Through the organization, students can attend professional development and resume workshops, network with human resource professionals in the area and participate in community events.

SHRM president Travis Doderlein said joining the organization has helped him grow as a professional and a person.

“Being able to accomplish so many things in less than two years is something I never could have imagined,” Doderlein said. “Leading this organization, with the help of my wonderful officers and members, made all the challenges I encountered easier.”

Is the Society for Human Resource Management open to all majors or is it major specific?

We are open to all majors, and have had non-business majors serve as officers in the past.

When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?

We look for students who are ambitious and want to get involved. The members who are most successful in our organization are the ones who show up consistently, utilize all resources and put in the time to improve not just themselves but the people around them.

When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?

Our meetings are from 4-6 p.m. every Tuesday in the Metzli Room on the second floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. The membership fee is $20 per semester.

Does your organization have any events coming up?

We have elections coming up on April 25. We have elections every semester and each position re-opens. Students can check the calendar on our website for more upcoming events.

How can students find more information about your organization?

Students can contact us at [email protected] or visit our website and Facebook page. We always enjoy meeting with prospective students and telling them all about the opportunities our organization offers.

What kind of activities does your organization plan and attend?

We invite guest speakers to attend meetings and talk about various topics ranging from human resources to personal professional development. We also host workshops on topics including LinkedIn, personal branding, preparing for an interview, and how to create a portfolio. Our biggest event of the year is our mentoring event, where members connect with 24 San Diego HR professionals in a one-on-one setting. We also spend time giving back to the community by attending events like Race for Autism at Balboa Park, NFL Play 60, and our own event called Clean the World.

Which SDSU faculty have had an impact on your organization?

SDSU professor Michelle Dean, who is our advisor, has had a tremendous impact on our organization, and was recently named the National SHRM Advisor of the Year. She attends every meeting and every event. She truly cares about the development of every student and has always been there whenever I need help.
