Student Organization Spotlight: SDSU Running Club
The SDSU Running Club is a community of like-minded, hard-working individuals who enjoy physical activity.
Through the organization, members can train for their next competitive event, take part in social events and develop friendships with like-minded students.
SDSU Running Club president Nate Kling founded the organization in fall 2016 to provide a community for students of various backgrounds to strive for academic and athletic success.
“Joining a recreational club can have many benefits, including mental and physical health,” Kling said. “During my time as president, I’ve had the chance to introduce a lot of students to the running community. We wanted to show students that these types of communities can be accessible to everyone. It is always an amazing feeling to see one of the members achieve a personal best in a race or exhibit some kind of personal growth as a result of our organization.”
Is the SDSU Running Club open to all majors or is it major specific?
We welcome all students in the SDSU community.
When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?
We welcome all students who have a love for running, no matter what distance or speed they are comfortable with. Our new members can range from people with no running experience to those who are looking to race competitively. We have a wide range of members, so people are easily able to find their similar speed group.
When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?
Our club meets for runs at 4 p.m. every weekday at the ENS 700 field, and there is no fee to become a member of our club. When creating our club, one of our guiding principles was to make membership accessible for all students, no matter their financial or athletic ability.
How can students find more information about your organization?
Anyone who wants to learn more about our club can visit our Facebook page, our Instagram or our website. You can also contact us by emailing [email protected].
What kind of activities does your organization plan and attend?
Our club organizes a run every weekday, where our members group together for that day’s workout based upon the distance and speed they would like to run. Throughout each month, we also plan various social activities and attend local running events.
Which SDSU faculty have had an impact on your organization?
Bill Aaron, our faculty advisor, has provided a guiding hand during the formation of the club. His experience in the local running community has spanned from teaching the half-marathon class on campus to acting as president of the local San Diego Track Club. On top of helping us learn how to grow as runners, he has shown the officers of our club how to work as leaders in the athletic community.
