SDSU Sciences Dean Recognized for STEM Diversity Efforts
Estralita Martin was given an Inspiring Leaders in STEM Award.
The magazine reads, "A professor of biology, Martin has focused on helping African American students understand the connections between the African diaspora and the underrepresentation of African Americans in medicine by leading annual study abroad experiences that center on minority health disparities in Ghana.”
The INSIGHT Into Diversity article continues, “As director of the Center for the Advancement of Students in Academia, she leads SDSU’s efforts to level the academic playing field for minorities in STEM and to prepare these students for the rigors of postgraduate studies in order to build the pipeline of the next generation of diverse STEM leaders.”
In 2012, she was given an Outstanding Black Educators Award from the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa.
"I am very honored to be the recipient of this award," Martin said. "The administration, faculty and staff of the university, the College of Sciences and the Center for the Advancement of Students in Academia are equally important. Without the encouragement and support of these essential entities to admit, mentor and provide resources for students of diverse cultures to excel and become leaders within the scientific community, my efforts would likely go unnoticed."
