Creation of the Homecoming logo

Designing this year’s official Homecoming logo was a combination of Matthew Ortiz’s two biggest passions: illustration and SDSU football.
Ortiz was selected as the winner of this year’s official Homecoming logo design contest for his submission of “Clash for the Can.”
A life-long Aztec fan and current season-ticket holder, Ortiz jumped at the opportunity to submit a Homecoming logo design.
“It’s a family university,” said Ortiz. “My father worked in the SDSU Athletic Department for over 20 years, so we grew up going to every single football, basketball and baseball game.”
For his design, Ortiz opted to let the font and movement of the design speak for itself. The logo consists of big red and white lettering with a central image of a black football containing the SDSU logo.
According to Ortiz, his winning design took between five and 10 hours from concept to completion.
“It feels great,” Ortiz said on winning the contest. “I’m passionate about art work, SDSU Athletics and the university as a whole, so it was very exciting.”
As the top finisher in the design contest sponsored by Associated Students, Ortiz’s design will be printed on a black T-shirt that will be sold at the SDSU Bookstore.
