Student Organization Spotlight: Real Estate Society
The SDSU Real Estate Society mentors students interested in real estate.
Through the organization, members have the opportunity to network with industry professionals, participate in case studies off campus and learn about internship and career opportunities.
Jeremiah Taylor, president of the Real Estate Society, said joining the organization has impacted his academic and personal experience at SDSU.
“I am very grateful for the positive impact the Real Estate Society has had on my professional and academic development, along with how it has affected my time at SDSU,” Taylor said.
Is the Real Estate Society open to all majors or is it major specific?
The Real Estate Society is open to all majors, and we appreciate when we get a variety of members with different academic backgrounds combined with different career goals. Very few students plan on going into real estate as a career, and we recognize that. We try to add value to any major that joins our club. Our goal is that any student who joins the Real Estate Society will gain useful knowledge and skills that could be applicable to their lives.
When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?
Our organization is looking for anyone who is interested in real estate, whether is for a career or personal life. Our main hope is that anyone who joins the Real Estate Society genuinely desires to learn about real estate, and that when they come to our events they fulfill that desire.
When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?
We have meetings from 5-7 p.m. every other Tuesday at Scripps Cottage. The meetings feature food, light networking, and a guest speaker from the real estate industry. Anyone can come to these general meetings, whether a paid member or not. Becoming a paid member has major advantages, including case study events off campus, networking events, occasional socials, and learning sessions only open to RES members and real estate majors or minors. The fee for membership is $40 a semester, or $60 for the full year, which helps us cover the costs of food, event space, and opportunities for students in the organization.
How can students find more information about your organization?
We recommend students go to our website to learn more about our organization, including our mission, events, executive board, and more. Another way to keep updated on the Real Estate Society’s progress is by liking our Facebook page or by following our Instagram account.
What kind of activities does your organization plan and attend? Do you have any events coming up?
The Real Estate Society plans and attends over 20 events over the course of the school year, most of them being on-campus guest speakers or off-campus case studies. We also plan joint events with other student organizations over the school year, networking events, and socials occasionally. We are in the process of planning a career fair for real estate students, to help the students meet the companies that are hiring and hopefully make it possible for them to land some great jobs.
What can students gain from joining this organization?
Students at SDSU can gain a variety of special opportunities by joining the Real Estate Society. The mission of the Real Estate Society is to thoroughly prepare students for a rewarding career within the real estate industry through learning, scholarship, networking, and experience-building opportunities. If a student joins the society and they put their best efforts into participating, they should gain many insights and skills that will give them an advantage in decision making for life moving forward.
Which SDSU faculty have had an impact on your organization?
The real estate faculty and staff on campus at SDSU are not large in their numbers, but they are huge in the impacts they make on students every day. The faculty, within the Department of Finance, teach all the Real Estate specific courses on campus. Mark Goldman, our organization’s faculty advisor who teaches real estate investment analysis has a positive impact on our club by giving the executive board advice, bringing new students into the club, and supporting our vision and future. All the faculty and staff including Dana Kuhn, Patrick Smith and Melissa Abeyta work very hard to ensure the success of the SDSU real estate students, which the Real Estate Society appreciates highly.
