Best of the Best Film Fest Highlights Student Achievement in Film
The film festival is one of the Arts Alive SDSU spring 2018 signature events.
Arts Alive SDSU is kicking off the spring semester with a two-day film festival. The movies featured in the Best of the Best Film Fest are written, produced and edited by students enrolled in San Diego State University’s Television, Film, and New Media (TFM) program and recent graduates. The festival runs Feb. 7-8 at the Don Powell Theatre.
Featuring a variety of documentaries, dramatic fiction, comedies and animated short films, the festival showcases the broad spectrum of voices and perspectives that film students bring to their craft.
“These films represent some of the strongest work produced in the TFM program,” said Greg Durbin, area head for SDSU’s TFM program. “In many cases, the filmmakers whose work is featured have already begun to achieve wide recognition for their films.”
Showcasing student talent
Student filmmakers serve as the directors, producers, editors, writers, and camera operators and ensure their films are the highest-possible quality, both artistically and technically. For some of these filmmakers, the Best of the Best Film Fest presents the first opportunity to view their film with a large audience.
“It is so fun seeing the reactions of the audience as they watch what I spent countless hours working on,” said fifth-year film student Marguerite Davidson. “Film festivals are a great opportunity to help gauge the success of your film, as well as share it with friends and family.”
Faculty in the TFM program advise students throughout the filmmaking process and encourage them to create films they are passionate about. Through the support of the faculty and resources of the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, students are able to create the films they envision.
“I couldn't have written ‘Beam Down For What’ if it weren't for the amazing art programs at SDSU,” said TFM student Mico Ramos. “Whether the programs were provided by Arts Alive, included within the curriculum, or started by students, I was able to study comedy and storytelling in many very different ways and from unique perspectives.”

Both nights of the Best of the Best Film Fest run roughly 90 minutes. General admission tickets cost $10 and can be purchased online or at the Don Powell Theatre box office.
