McGrory Continues Support of SDSU's Student Veterans
A popular gathering space in SDSUs Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center was renamed to honor one of the universitys most generous supporters.
The Jack McGrory Bunker will serve as the “home base” for military-affiliated students on campus.
McGrory gave nearly $3 million to The Campaign for SDSU. His contributions support student veterans and their families, active military and ROTC students as well as students in the School of Public Affairs and the Department of Classics and Humanities.
“Jack’s loyalty and leadership have helped transform our veterans’ programs and, indeed, the entire university,” said SDSU President Sally Roush. “The naming of the Jack McGrory Bunker ensures future generations of students will remember Jack’s commitment every time they come in to study, relax and connect with other student-veterans.”
Dedication to SDSU
McGrory, who served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, earned his master’s degree in public administration from SDSU. Attending classes at night, he utilized his VA Bill benefits to help pay first for a master’s degree, then a law degree.He went on to a successful career in public service, real estate and community service, including serving as San Diego’s city manager from 1991 to 1997.
McGrory has taught public administration courses at SDSU for nearly three decades and currently chairs the Veterans Advisory Council.
To celebrate McGrory’s contributions to the university, SDSU administrators, students and Veterans Center staff members unveiled a plaque in the bunker that reads: “Jack McGrory. Semper fidelis. Jack has been a generous champion of all student veterans at San Diego State University and the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. To the student veterans at SDSU Jack remains ever faithful. Marine/Advocate/Aztec.”
“As a student on campus, I am grateful to have the bunker to go to,” said Belen Boudreau, president of SDSU’s Student Veterans Organization. “On behalf of our military-connected students here at SDSU, thank you Jack for your generosity and support to veterans and their dependents at SDSU and the larger community you serve, we are truly grateful.”
