SDSU Graduate Programs Shine in U.S. News and World Report 2019 Rankings
Education, social work and public affairs are the most competitive.
Graduate programs in nursing and public affairs also ranked highly compared with similar programs across the United States.
SDSU continues to rise in the U.S. News and World Report‘s annual rankings for all programs. In the most recent list released in September 2017, SDSU placed No. 68 among public universities and No. 140 overall among national universities.
The university has been gaining ground in these rankings for the last five years, moving up 25 spots from No. 165 among national universities since 2012. The university also gained 22 spots among public universities (No. 90 in 2012).
Highly competitive
In the graduate rankings just released, SDSU’s College of Education rose to No. 54 in the country, compared with No. 57 in the previous report. It is ranked No. 40 among public universities nationwide, is the seventh highest ranked in California and the highest ranked in San Diego.
“These strong rankings are due in part to the reputation that College of Education faculty have established as leaders in their various disciplines,” said Joseph Johnson, dean of the college. “Our faculty have been remarkably successful in acquiring research funding and developing innovative programs that prepare outstanding professionals.”
The School of Social Work’s graduate programs, located in the College of Health and Human Services, came in at No. 59. The School of Nursing’s graduate programs, housed in the same college, placed at No. 78 among approximately 300 programs across the country.
Graduate programs in SDSU’s School of Public Affairs rank No. 77 among more than 350 nationwide.
Other recent rankings
The latest U.S. News and World Report data did not include rankings for all graduate programs. In previous rankings published within the last five years, several SDSU programs were also highly competitive.SDSU programs ranked in the top 25 include rehabilitation counseling (No. 10), speech and language pathology (No. 24), and clinical psychology (No. 25). Programs ranked in the top 50 include nursing midwifery (No. 28), audiology (No. 30) and public health (No. 39).
Recent success
SDSU is nationally recognized for academic excellence and for many outstanding programs that support student success. In the past year, the university was named to Princeton Review’s listing of best colleges—about 15 percent of four-year universities made the list. SDSU also was recognized as a top school for the number of students who study abroad and for its support of LGBTQ students.The university recently completed its first comprehensive fundraising campaign, which exceeded its $750 million goal by raising a total of $815.2 million, ensuring future support for scholarships, programs, faculty, students and staff.
