Athletics Breaks School Record for NCAA APR
The Academic Progress Rate holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes.
The 2016-17 APR report includes only those student-athletes who were on athletic scholarship during the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years. To compete in the 2018-19 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 multi-year APR score, which predicts, on average, a 50 percent graduation rate for teams at that APR level.
All 19 varsity sports (represented by 18 scores as indoor and outdoor track and field receive one score) received APR scores of 956 or higher, and 13 teams had scores of 980 or higher, which was one better than last year’s effort.
The average APR multi-year program score for SDSU is 985. That is a three point improvement over last year’s multi-year score, and is the highest in school history.
Additionally, women’s tennis and volleyball had perfect multi-year scores of 1,000, and were recognized by the NCAA for ranking in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. With the two programs receiving the honor, SDSU has now received the NCAA honor a total of 15 times in school history.
The women’s tennis program has received this honor five of the last six seasons, becoming one of only three Mountain West Conference women’s tennis programs to earn the honor at least five times.
The volleyball program has also earned the NCAA distinction three times in school history, including each of the last two seasons. The program is one of only three MW volleyball programs to receive the NCAA recognition on at least three occasions.
Nine programs improved their multi-year APR rate from the previous year, and four teams (men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf and men’s tennis) saw double-digit improvement from a season ago.
SDSU had 16 programs achieve a single-year APR of 970 or higher with 15 boasting a score of 980 or higher. Additionally, 11 programs had perfect single-year scores of 1,000, surpassing last season’s total of eight. The Aztecs’ single-year APR average score for 2016-17 is 992, setting a new school record.
