Aztecs Qualify for NCAA Track and Field Championships
SDSU has had a representative at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 21 of the past 22 years.
Headed to the NCAA Championships will be 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay squads along with Ashley Henderson in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash and Lisa-Anne Barrow in the 400-meter dash.
"San Diego State Track and Field is a visible program in the NCAAs and I'm pleased to see that this team continues to step up to the standards and expectations we have set for them,” said head coach Shelia Burrell. “We are a good team that keeps getting better."
At the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in Sacramento, California, Henderson finished second in her 200-meter dash heat with a time of 22.82 seconds to advance to Eugene. This is the third straight year Henderson will compete in both the 100 and 200 on the national stage.
Henderson also had the second best time of the night in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.18, to qualify for her third consecutive Outdoor Championship.
The Aztecs' 4x100-meter relay team of Callista Fletcher, Simone Glenn, Rochene Smith and Barrow came in second in their heat and sixth overall with a time of 44.39. This is the third consecutive year SDSU has had a 4x100-meter relay team qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The Aztecs also received a strong qualifying performance in the 4x400-meter relay. Lakin Hatcher, Jalyn Harris, Tyra Lea and Barrow finished in 3:36.08 to become the first SDSU 4x400-meter relay team to advance to nationals since 2006.
Barrow won her heat in the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 51.86 to qualify for her first NCAA Championship. It was the first time Barrow has finished the 400 in under 52 seconds and her mark is good for the third best time in school history.
SDSU has had a representative at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 21 of the past 22 years.
Last month, SDSU Track and Field won its fourth Mountain West Outdoor Championship in the last six years.
