San Diego State University has been named one of the country’s top colleges by The Princeton Review.

Given the exceptional academic and social experiences San Diego State University provides its students, the institution is becoming a mainstay on The Princeton Review’s Best 384 Colleges list.

SDSU’s two-page profile within the college guide notes the university’s impressive continuation and graduation rates. Eighty-nine percent of SDSU's freshmen students return as sophomores, and roughly 75 percent of first-time freshmen graduate in six years or less.

"We are humbled by and proud of this prestigious recognition, which reflects SDSU's commitment to investing in world-class teaching and research, supporting our exceptional faculty and graduating the global citizens, compassionate leaders, and ethical innovators who help solve the world's greatest challenges," said SDSU President Adela de la Torre.

Published annually since 1992, the college guide provides detailed profiles of colleges with rating scores in eight categories, including academics, financial aid and overall quality of life on campus. The list is based on surveys of 138,000 students at the 384 top colleges that represent wide representation by region, size, selectivity and character.

Based on student feedback

The Princeton Review’s flagship college guide does not rank colleges 1 to 384, but instead highlights each standout school in alphabetical order.

The Princeton Review’s college guide also features top 20 rankings in 62 categories. The lists are based on an 80-question survey asking students to rate their schools on several topics, including classroom experience, extracurricular activities and social scene.

This year, SDSU ranked No. 7 in the book’s “Lots of Greek Life” category, which is based on the survey question asking students about the popularity of Greek life on campus.

Rising in the rankings

SDSU has received increased recognition for its outstanding programs. The university has been recognized as a top school for study abroadmilitary-affiliated students and LGBT programming.

Since 2012, the university has also climbed 25 spots to No. 140 overall among national universities in the annual U.S. News & World Report ranking of America’s Best Colleges.
