Once again, San Diego State University students are coming together to combat food insecurity on campus and across San Diego County.

The Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign works in partnership with The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to collect both nonperishable food items and monetary donations for those in need. A $1 donation can provide up to six pounds of food.

Eighty percent of monetary donations go to the food bank, while the remaining 20 percent will go to SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT uses the donations to provide short-term and long-term aid to students experiencing food insecurity.

Since its start in 2010, Aztecs Rock Hunger has donated more than 2 million pounds of food, or the monetary equivalent, to The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

Last year, the student-driven initiative collected 588,915 pounds of food. The amount far surpassed the initial goal of 500,000 pounds of food, making it the most successful drive in campaign history.

This year, organizers hope to collect 700,000 pounds of food.

The drive, organized through SDSU’s Associated Students (A.S.), works in conjunction with several other campus organizations, including Aztec Shops, Residential Education and Housing Administration and SDSU Athletics as well as off-campus organizations such as the College Area Business District.

Donations will be collected
at various Aztec Proud events, athletic events and special events at College Area businesses.   Additionally, SDSU's student philanthropy initiative, Aztec Proud, is partnering with Aztecs Rock Hunger for the fourth consecutive year. When a student donates $10 to Aztecs Rock Hunger through Aztec Proud, they will receive an SDSU Aztec hat.
