On behalf of San Diego State University, we offer our most sincere condolences to the families and others connected to the 11 people who were killed on Saturday at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. To all members of the Jewish community: We stand with you, we support you, and we will continue to do our part to promote a more compassionate society.

Some members of our campus community may have a wide range of emotions and some may feel unsafe and vulnerable. SDSU has resources available to our students, faculty, and staff should they need support:

  • Professionals at Counseling and Psychological Services are available at 619-594-5220 and [email protected] to support students.
  • The Employee Assistance Program is available for faculty and staff through the Center for Human Resources at 619-594-6404.

We want to also take the opportunity to address other troubling events that have taken place regionally and nationally. We must affirm our campus values that encourage dignity and well-being for all people, no matter an individual’s race, ethnicity, gender, age, religious or spiritual tradition, political leaning, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

SDSU is a diverse community of people with differing backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs. We value inclusion for all members of our community. We are all connected, and we each benefit from our collective diversity. The tragedy in Pittsburgh and other recent incidents that appear to be hate-driven remind us that we should continue to work toward building a community that is inclusive, supportive, and caring for all.

Today...

Hillel at San Diego State University is hosting a vigil at 5:30 p.m. at the Melvin Garb Hillel Center, 5717 Lindo Paseo, to support each other and to offer some words of prayer and reflection. The center has invited the campus community to join in solidarity.

Sincerely,

Adela de la Torre
