San Diego-based alumni and friends of the national honor society, Mortar Board, have secured more than $50,000 for an endowment to support scholarship awards and other Mortar Board activities at the local and national levels.

As the national organization celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, the Jane K. Smith Cap and Gown Chapter of Mortar Board at San Diego State University marked its 86th year as an official chapter.

The SDSU chapter was acknowledged this past summer for its fundraising campaign, led by Mary Ruth Carleton, vice president emerita for University Relations and Development. A past president of the San Diego alumni chapter and former national Mortar Board Foundation trustee, Carleton will be recognized during a national Mortar Board event in May 2019.

In addition, Darlene Davies (’62, ‘65), former SDSU chapter president, received the Mortar Board Distinguished Lifetime Membership Award and SDSU chapter member Cassandra Conboy Neel received the Excellence in Advising Award.

Davies and Neel, with assistance from Karen Tom, Enrollment Services and Robert Ray, director of Special Collections, created a pictorial history of SDSU’s Mortar Board Chapter from 1932 to 2018. The book was published by Montezuma Press.
