With the start of the 2019-20 academic year, San Diego State University and the University Police Department (UPD) are committed to providing a safe environment for the campus community.
UPD recognizes the value in collaborating with our diverse community to improve the quality of life for those who live, work, study, or visit at SDSU.
“Safety is our top priority. We strive to provide exceptional police services while building trust with those we serve,” SDSU Police Chief Josh Mays said. “We value proactive policing and regularly conduct patrol checks throughout campus.”
UPD headquarters is located at 5350 55th Street, next to Peterson Gym. The substation is located on the first floor of College Square at the corner of Lindo Paseo and College Avenue.
While on campus, SDSU community members can report concerning behavior and suspicious activity by calling 619-594-1991. For general inquiries, email UPD at [email protected]
Campus community members also play an important role in ensuring a safe campus environment:

  • Call 9-1-1 during emergencies or utilize a blue-light emergency phone on campus
  • Remain aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions
  • Properly secure your belongings and do not leave them unattended
  • Use busier, well-lit walkways when traveling at night
  • Avoid listening to music when walking alone – loud music can make you less able to sense danger
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, leave the area and notify police
  • Utilize services offered by Parking & Transportation Services
