This year, 361 San Diego State University student-athletes were recognized as scholar-athletes by having achieved a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or higher, or having maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The 361 scholar-athletes was one off the school record of 362 set last year.

Malachi Flynn (men's basketball) and McKenna Meyer (swimming and diving) were named the Student-Athletes of the Year. This award, presented by athletics director John David Wicker and executive associate athletics director Jenny Bramer, is given annually to the all-around male and female student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

Seventeen student-athletes received the Malik Award, which goes to those who achieved the highest GPA in the fall and/or spring semester. Five student-athletes earned the Malik Award for both the spring and fall semester: Brooke Boron (rowing), Serena Hodson (volleyball), Jin Zihao (men's golf), Lee Lauren (volleyball), Abigail Reeder (women's soccer) and Danielle Stancikas (rowing).

The other Spring 2019 Malik Award winners include: Madeline Bernard (rowing), Michelle Jacob (rowing) and Emily Reed (swimming and diving).

Josh Bringuel (football), Laura Keane (rowing), Madison Lunde (rowing), Carlene Masar (cross country/track and field), Alicia Melosch (women's tennis), Katelyn Murphy (lacrosse), Kyler Sloan (rowing) and Alma Thormalm (swimming and diving) earned the Malik Award for the Fall 2019 semester.

The men's tennis and women's golf programs earned highest team GPA in both semesters. The women's golf team has now claimed the award for five straight semesters while the men's tennis team has held the top team GPA among SDSU men's programs for three straight semesters.

The Dr. Jim Kitchen Distinguished Service Award went to Sandra Cook, Associate Vice President Emeritus of Enrollment Services. This award is presented to an SDSU faculty or staff member who exemplifies extraordinary dedication and service in enhancing the student-athlete experience.
