Aztecs Garner Record 98 Academic All-Mountain West Honors

“The record number of Aztecs who achieved this distinction speaks to the caliber of student-athlete enrolled at San Diego State.”

A record 98 San Diego State University student-athletes earned Academic All-Mountain West honors for the spring 2020 semester, eclipsing the previous best of 72 honorees from spring 2016.

"The Academic All-Mountain West program recognizes student-athletes which have achieved athletic and academic excellence," Bobby Smitheran, senior associate athletic director of student-athlete academic support services, said following the league announcement on Monday. "The record number of Aztecs who achieved this distinction speaks to the caliber of student-athlete enrolled at San Diego State. These student-athletes were further challenged with a sudden shift to a virtual classroom and I am extremely proud of their achievement, which balanced the demands of their respective sports and academic course load."

In order to be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at their Mountain West member institution, maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and be a starter or significant contributor to their team.

With 27 student-athlete honorees, women's track and field earned the most awards among Aztecs who competed in the winter and spring semesters. Women's swimming and diving was second with 23 and three programs, baseball, softball and women's tennis, tied for third with eight awardees.

Five student-athletes — Shelby Thompson (softball), Delaney Gallagher (women's swimming and diving), McKenna Meyer (women's swimming and diving), Peyton Wilson (women's swimming and diving) and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (men's tennis) — earned their fourth Academic All-Mountain West honor. Sixteen received their third award and 23 were recognized for the second time.
