As of Thursday, Aug. 13, the sale of the Mission Valley stadium site is complete, escrow has closed, and San Diego State University has officially taken ownership and will begin development of SDSU Mission Valley. SDSU will host a groundbreaking event on Monday, Aug. 17, to celebrate this historic occasion for our university community and the San Diego region.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and as the stadium site is now an active construction site, this event will not be open to the general public. This is not the groundbreaking ceremony originally imagined prior to the onset of COVID-19, however, to celebrate this historic occasion with San Diego, the university has opted to create a livestream, which can be accessed on the SDSU homepage and will be recorded. The livestream event will include a short program of speakers followed by a ceremonial first “shovel in the ground.”

The event is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17 from 10:30 – 11 a.m. at the future site of SDSU Mission Valley and Aztec Stadium. Again, the event is not open to the public but will be livestreamed.
