“I am envigored by this plan, which was developed not by a small selective team, but by thousands of campus and general community members.”

After a full year of planning and preparation to launch the implementation period, San Diego State University is hosting a kickoff event for its new strategic plan, “We Rise We Defy: Transcending Borders, Transforming Lives.”

The event will be held virtually due to COVID-19-related concerns and restrictions. All members of the SDSU and general communities are invited to RSVP online and watch the streamed event on SDSU.edu at 10 a.m. on Sept. 16.

“This plan is reflective of the full 123 years of SDSU’s legacy, and will serve as the roadmap for this next chapter of our future,” said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. “With its detailed actions and goals, this strategic plan lays out how we will forge ahead to deliver academic excellence, advance student success, connect our campus locations, and elevate our levels of groundbreaking research.”

“I am envigored by this plan, which was developed not by a small selective team, but by thousands of campus and general community members,” de la Torre said. “I urge everyone to prioritize this moment and to join us in a formal celebration of our shared vision for a future that will create new opportunities for every member of our campus community.”

De la Torre has selected the implementation team co-chairs: Agnes Wong Nickerson, interim vice president of financial affairs and chief financial officer, and J. Luke Wood, vice president for student affairs and campus diversity.

In September 2019, SDSU officially launched its planning process, ultimately leading to development of the five-year strategic plan. Nearly 4,000 people representing all levels of the university were involved in the comprehensive, months-long effort to define the future for SDSU, SDSU Imperial Valley, SDSU Georgia, SDSU Mission Valley, SDSU Global Campus and the university’s microsite offerings.

The strategic plan defines five key priorities with 54 embedded goals that will send the university into a new era of development and success by creating new and diversified revenue streams, expanding educational opportunity and innovating life-changing research and also academic and non-academic initiatives. The implementation team will  develop plans to deliver the university’s goals over the five years of the plan.

“Everyone who has or anticipates a connection with our university community is invited to this event,” Wood said. “The kickoff of our strategic plan is an exciting and critically important moment for one SDSU community as we are now setting the new direction for the future of SDSU.”
