SDSU Announces Special Admission Considerations, Expanded Community College Microsites

As part of a new policy, community college students participating in targeted retention programs will begin to receive special admissions consideration when applying to San Diego State University. Specifically, students involved in Umoja, Puente, Calworks and Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) programs are eligible. The policy also extends to a program that started at San Diego City College and has expanded throughout the region called  Hermanos-Unidos Brothers United (HUBU).

The new program, announced during a Feb. 25 webinar, follows a year-long process where SDSU engaged campus stakeholders, as well as local partners in the K-12 space, community colleges, and non-profit organizations. This change in policy was a direct request from community colleges who heralded the high-quality preparation students received in these programs.

“Students in programs like Umoja and Puente have been well prepared to succeed after transfering to a four-year-institution. These programs provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to transfer and achieve at SDSU. Our change in policy is an acknowledgement of the critical work these programs have done over the years to foster access, equity, and excellence,” said J. Luke Wood, Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. 

SDSU Microsites

This new program also includes the addition of several high demand degree programs through expanded community college microsite offerings.

The SDSU Degree Completion Programs through Microsites, run by the SDSU Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity and SDSU Global Campus, applies to students at a handful of area community colleges, with more campuses planned to be added.

Together, SDSU and our college partners understand that attaining a traditional four-year degree can be difficult. Many of today’s students have full- or part-time jobs, families, and other commitments, which is why SDSU, and its partners, have created new programs to fit the unique educational needs of those students.

With around-the-clock access to SDSU’s online course offerings and SDSU’s student services available at the community college campus microsite, students enrolled can attain a valuable degree from SDSU, all on their schedule.

The idea of microsites is not new. SDSU Global Campus has previously partnered with area community colleges. The new program offers additional pathways through increased microsite offerings and additional SDSU-centric student support services. 

The microsite program is currently being offered at:

• San Diego City College
• San Diego Mesa College
• Southwestern College
• Others expected to be announced this year

For fall 2021, degrees will be offered to microsite students at partner community college campuses in the following areas of study:

• Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
• Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
• Bachelor of Science in Communication

Upon completion of the program, a student will be awarded the same SDSU degree that is currently awarded on campus. The diploma will not say “online degree,” since the program is taught by the faculty of SDSU, in compliance with the curriculum approved for each degree.

When applying to the program, students should have 60 or more semester units (90 or more quarter units) completed. The full admission requirements can be found on the Global Campus transfer admissions information page.
