Taking full advantage of an increasingly popular route to stay on track to graduation, more than 10,530 students have enrolled in summer sessions this year at San Diego State University.

It’s the second straight summer in which enrollment has topped 10,000. Registration is far ahead of the 8,536 total for 2019, the most recent year to feature a mix of both in-person and online classes.

The 2021 summer session schedule featured courses offered for periods of four, six, eight and 13 weeks. The summer’s second six-week session is currently underway with registration open through July 14 as well as an eight-week Chemistry 100 course that began June 21.

A registration portal can be found at SDSU’s WebPortal.

Stefan Hyman, associate vice president for enrollment management, identified three specific steps taken by SDSU for summer 2021 to help students earn credits that fulfill degree requirements and graduate on time:

  • Additional seats for “gateway” courses: These are lower-division courses required for students pursuing a specified major: Chemistry 200, for instance, a requirement for most science majors.
  • “We've also added a new set of courses geared towards incoming first-year and transfer students,” Hyman said, “recognizing that there may be some with learning gaps due to their experiences in the last year.” This included courses in the Freshman Academic Success Track (FAST) program for local students, which provides additional academic support to students before their fall coursework.
  • The chance to earn a minor in leadership on a two-summer track. “We plan to expand this concept in future years,” he said.

Hyman said SDSU expects to restore in-person courses to the schedule in summer 2022 – along with “many opportunities for social engagement.”
