SDSU Mission Valley: One Year After Breaking Ground
A look at the many construction milestones and whats coming next.
One month after breaking ground, in September 2020, SDSU and SDSU Athletics jointly announced an accelerated construction timeline to ensure Aztec Stadium would be ready for fans by fall 2022. Last month’s steel-topping out ceremony, which signaled the conclusion of the first phase of construction, reaffirmed that Aztec Stadium is almost halfway to completion and on track to open on Sept. 3, 2022, when the Aztec football team will take on the University of Arizona Wildcats in the season home opener.
The decision to expedite the construction process ultimately benefited the overall development timeline for SDSU Mission Valley, which is set to expand the university’s economic impact in the region by $3 billion annually. As of August, the former stadium is entirely decommissioned and demolished, unlocking the development potential of the rest of the site, including the River Park, Innovation District, housing, and retail. Initial site construction is underway, including grading to elevate the development out of the flood plain and initial site infrastructure.
As reflected by the progress made in one year, the much-anticipated mixed-use and transit-oriented SDSU Mission Valley site is expected to transform the university and the greater San Diego region.
The first phases of the Innovation District and residential development will begin once the initial site construction is complete, and the site will be ready to begin vertical construction in late 2022. The River Park is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
