The San Diego State University Aztecs climbed to No. 22 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll after a double-overtime win at San José State University Friday night. SDSU (6-0, 2-0 Mountain West) is now one of only 11 undefeated teams in the FBS this season.

The new college football ranking is up two notches from the Aztecs’ position in last week’s AP poll. In the new AFCA Coaches Poll, SDSU checked in at No. 21.

SDSU is off to a 6-0 start for the second time since 2017 after beating the San José State Spartans 19-13.

Tied 6-6 at the end of regulation play, the Aztecs needed a spark on offense and Lucas Johnson delivered.

Johnson relieved Jordon Brookshire in the fourth quarter and threw touchdown passes to Jesse Matthews in both overtime periods.

"We just thought we were a little stagnant and we needed to do something different," coach Brady Hoke said.

Neither team scored a touchdown in regulation before Johnson delivered a 14-yard pass on the opening possession of overtime for the Aztecs.

Tyler Nevens answered with a 1-yard run for the Spartans (3-4, 1-2). But Trenton Thompson intercepted Nick Nash to start the second overtime and set the stage for Johnson and Matthews.

The Aztecs visit the Air Force Falcons Saturday at Falcon Stadium in Colorado. Game time is 4 p.m. PDT, to be televised on CBS Sports Network.
