CFP Surprise: Aztecs Enter Playoff Rankings for First Time Ever
SDSU is No. 24 on the list, just behind Fresno State.
San Diego State University is 24th in the initial College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee Rankings of the 2021 season, released Tuesday. It is the first time the Aztecs have ever made the CFP rankings and comes after the team fell out of both the AP Top 25 Poll and the AFCA Coaches Poll on Sunday.
The Aztecs are 7-1, matching their best eight-game start of the last 46 seasons. SDSU has a pair of wins over Pac-12 programs in Utah and Arizona with its only loss coming last Saturday to Fresno State, 30-20.
The CFP rankings determine the seeds for the college football playoff semifinals, to be played this season on Dec. 31 at the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl games. The national championship game follows on Jan. 10, 2022.
In the committee’s first rankings of the season, SDSU is just ahead of No. 25 Pittsburgh (6-2) and one spot behind No. 23 Fresno State (7-2). Georgia, Alabama, Michigan State and Oregon are the top four teams in the initial rankings.
The Aztecs play at Hawai'i at 8 p.m. PDT on Saturday, Nov. 6, to be carried on FS1.
