California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins sponsored a resolution honoring San Diego State University’s 125th anniversary and its continued commitment to students, faculty, staff and the greater San Diego region.

The resolution serves as a signal of support from the California State Senate and Atkins.

The resolution reads: “SDSU has provided generations of students with the enriched educational experience that comes from the successful interaction of a diverse academic community and has created a thriving community for the twenty-first century.” The resolution references SDSU’s longstanding relationship with the region, from its beginning as a training facility for elementary school teachers to its expansion and growth in becoming a leading public research university and federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution.

The resolution also recognizes the opportunities the university provides to more than 36,000 students each year including the highly ranked graduate programs and 96 bachelor degree areas.

“We are honored to receive a resolution from Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins on behalf of the California State Senate, acknowledging our anniversary and commending San Diego State University for the invaluable contributions it has made to the intellectual and social growth of the students of California,” said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. “Additionally, Senator Atkins praises the enriched educational experience that comes from the successful interaction of an incredibly diverse academic community. SDSU is one of a kind, and we couldn't be more confident about the next 125 years, with our major expansions in Mission Valley and Imperial Valley. Senator Atkins could not join us today, but I want to extend our appreciation for this honor.”

The resolution was announced as part of SDSU’s 125th anniversary kick-off event on March 14, where the university hosted both a community open house and birthday celebration.
