Student Scholarship Shines at the 2022 Student Research Symposium
Hundreds of students participated in SDSUs annual showcase of student research, scholarship and creative activities.
Transgender representation in video games. Mapping the everyday lives of the houseless. Vaccine hesitancy in Imperial Valley. Snake personalities.
These are just a few of the wide-ranging topics that undergraduate and graduate students explored at the 2022 Student Research Symposium, San Diego State University’s annual showcase of student research, scholarship and creative activities.
Roughly 350 student presenters and more than 180 judges and moderators participated in the event March 4-5 at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
Some 77 students won awards, and more than $19,000 in cash prizes were distributed. Ten Presidential Award winners will represent SDSU during the system-wide California State University competition taking place virtually April 29-30 and hosted by San Francisco State University.
“Getting to talk to my peers and others helps you conceptualize what you are really doing and how it makes an impact,” said Ysabel Gonzalez, who is pursuing her master’s in political science and presented her case study of how economic sanctions have impacted Cuba.
“At SDSU, we see research, scholarship and creative activity as the kind of high-impact practices that can really transform a student’s college experience and set them up for success in their career,” said Hala Madanat, interim vice president for research and innovation. “It is so great to see this work come to fruition at SRS and learn about all the wonderful things our students are accomplishing.”
A list of the 2022 SRS award winners is available, and more information can be found on the Student Research Symposium website.
SRS 2022 was supported by title sponsor Quidel, as well as platinum sponsor Hologic, and gold-level sponsors Qualcomm and Northrop Grumman.
