VIDEO: In a San Diego Community Garden, Public Impact Research Blossoms
Students and faculty worked with community organizations to strategize the best ways to bring fresh produce to underserved populations.
For public health major Jewelle Tibayan (‘22) research didn’t mean pipetting in a fluorescent-lit lab or mathematical modeling on a computer.
No lab coats weren’t necessary for Tibayan’s project.
Instead, it was the warm summer breeze, the earthy scent of soil, the delicate leaves of tomato plants and one timely, critical question that fueled her research pursuits.
The question: How can we provide San Diego’s underserved communities with access to fresh vegetables in place of food deserts?
Throughout 2022, Tibayan worked with a group of fellow public health students and faculty mentor John Elder, a longtime public health researcher, to strategize the best way to build and operate a community garden component of a local food bank.
