San Diego State and Ohio University have agreed to open the 2023 football season on Aug. 26 at Snapdragon Stadium, the two teams announced Wednesday. It will be the first of three home games to start the 2023 campaign for the Aztecs.

The Bobcats went 10-4 in 2022, advancing to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) title game and winning the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl.

"We're excited to kick off our 2023 campaign out west against a championship-caliber opponent in San Diego State," Ohio football head coach Tim Albin told the campus news staff. "Since facing them in the 2018 DXL Frisco Bowl, I've followed the Aztecs program and I respect the work that Coach Hoke and his staff have done developing a tough, relentless football program like ours."

Ohio is one of five 10-win teams SDSU will play in 2023, joining Air Force (10-3), Oregon State (10-3), Boise State (10-4) and Mountain West champion Fresno State (10-4). Out of San Diego State's 12 scheduled opponents in 2023, eight will be against bowl teams, including UCLA (9-4), San José State (7-5) and Utah State (6-7).

Following the Aug. 26 home game with Ohio, the Aztecs welcome Idaho State on Sept. 2 (moved from the Aug. 26 date) and UCLA on Sept. 9, before a road outing at Oregon State on Sept. 16 closes out non-conference play. The MW schedule has not been released yet, but SDSU will host Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and Utah State, with road games set for Air Force, Colorado State, Hawai'i and San José State.

San Diego State defeated MAC champion Toledo, 17-14, last year at home, and is 15-1-1 against current members of the MAC and 10-1-1 vs. teams that were members in the MAC at game time. The Aztecs' lone setback, however, was a 27-0 loss to Ohio in the 2018 Frisco Bowl in Frisco, Texas. No current SDSU player appeared in the 2018 game against the Bobcats.

San Diego State finished its 2022 season with a 7-6 record, making it 13 straight years of being at least .500 with 12 of those being winning campaigns. Season ticket information will be released in the coming weeks.
