Events Calendar: Honoring Black History Month at SDSU
As SDSU celebrates Black History Month, join the Black Resource Center in collaboration with multiple on-campus organizations.
Black history is American history, and the SDSU Black Resource Center (BRC) has created extended programming honoring Black arts, culture, education, and community service.

Black LGBTQIA+ Film Series: James Baldwin "I Am Not Your Negro" Screening & Discussion
The BRC and the SD Black LGBTQ+ Coalition screens “I Am Not Your Negro,” a film about the 20th Century writer James Baldwin as he tells the story of race in modern America with his unfinished novel, “Remember This House.” This event is open to all SDSU students, faculty, and staff from noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, in the Leon Williams Room, 430/431 Love Library.
BRC x ASU Black Creation Gallery Walk
Join the Black Resource Center & Afrikan Student Union for a night of Black art, music, media and poetry 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.
2023 Black Musical Showcase
SDSU’s first Black theater organization, Black Renaissance, hosts a Black Musical Showcase from 7:30-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 in the Aztec Student Union Theatre. Join students performing songs written or sung by a Black artist in a musical.
Black LGBTQIA+ Film Series: Intersectional Lens Part 1: The Black, Queer, and Trans Experience
The film series purpose explores living in both identities as Black and LGBTQ+ in San Diego. This event is open to all SDSU students, faculty, and staff from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Leon Williams Room, 430/431 Love Library.
Future Black Scholars Day
The A.M.A.N.I. Project, a mentoring program where Black SDSU students work with Black elementary students attending predominantly white institutions, celebrates the achievements of those young students with their mentors and families from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.
African Student Union High School Conference
Local San Diego high school students have been invited to SDSU’s campus to learn about the Black collegiate experience at the annual ASU High School Conference from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in Montezuma Hall at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. All Black student organizations have been invited to present and guide workshops throughout the day as well. Volunteers are needed, please reach out to ASU directly to sign up.
Under-Protected, Over-Policed: The Criminalization of Undocumented and Black Immigrant with speaker Denea Joseph
Belize Afro-Latina activist Denea Joseph speaks on the intersection of Afro-Latinx identity, immigration, and the plight of undocumented Black immigrants from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 in Scripps Cottage.
Black LGBTQIA+ Film Series: The Inspection
This is the last film in the Black LGBTQIA+ film series. This film takes a journey with a young gay Black man who decides to join the marines. This event is open to all SDSU students, faculty, and staff from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Leon Williams Room, 430/431 Love Library.
Super Sunday/Gospel Fest
Super Sunday is a groundbreaking program that, at its core, helps California State University cultivate a relationship with children, high school students, their families and adults as a catalyst for deeper engagement. Ending in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center, Gospel Fest takes place on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 6-8:30 p.m.
BRC Birthday: Henrietta Goodwin Remembrance and Let the Poet Speak Event
To close out Black History Month, SDSU’s Black Resource Center is turning five years old. Come to the Conrad Prebys Student Union from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and celebrate the contributions BRC has made to Black students, faculty and staff, as well as the larger San Diego community.
