SDSU's Golden Galleria Dazzles With Student Artistry
From paintings to drawings and photography, the Aztec Student Union Board’s first-ever Golden Galleria shed light on the true creativity of San Diego State University students.
“I wanted to have a way for students to showcase their creativity to the rest of the student body,” said Acacia Sellars, chair of the culture and arts committee in the Aztec Student Union Board (ASUB). “My intention was really for anyone that was into artwork … you don't have to be an art major to do this so it's open to everybody.”
The event was held on Oct. 12 at the Lee and Frank Goldberg Courtyard of Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
First prize went to fourth-year graphic design major Sincere Robinson for his spray-painted artwork, “Out of Mind.” The rhinestone and glitter painting, which took Robinson two weeks to complete, took into account abstract, acrylic and different mediums of paint.
Totaling 30 artists and open to all to attend, the concept of Golden Galleria was to provide an opportunity for students to express their passions and share their artistic insights in an environment where they can inspire each other while also receiving support and networking opportunities.
The venue itself had a sophisticated and creative setting as artists shared their work with guests. Attendees were welcomed by a red carpet and the Hollywood party favorite: 360 video booth. Fancy Prickly Pear Mock Ritas and Blood Orange Spritzer mocktails were served while a harpist played live music throughout the night.
The top three winners were chosen by attendees, who had the opportunity to vote on their five favorite pieces. Top-place Robinson was awarded a Canon EOS Rebel T7 Camera. The second and third-place participants were awarded a JBL Charge 4 Speaker and Deco Mini7 sketch pad.
Robinson believed that the biggest takeaway behind his art is to know your worth and to keep trying your best.
