As part of the ongoing priority San Diego State University places on individual and campus safety, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to familiarize themselves with safety-related training and resources, including those related to active shooters.

“It is so important that each of us is well-informed of what to do in an emergency situation, including an active shooter scenario,” said University Police Department Chief Gregory L. Murphy

“Safety is a shared responsibility,” Murphy said. “Through training, and through the use of our resources and programs, we can work together to help make our campus a safe and welcome community for all.”

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to watch the 11-minute, comprehensive, SDSU-specific active shooter safety training video. The video details possible ways to respond during active shooter incidents.

UPD’s Community Resource Officer (CRO) is also available to provide one-hour, in-person presentations about active shooter response safety to any campus organizations, groups, recognized student clubs and departments.

The CRO also offers Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (C.P.T.E.D.) assessments to identify ways to mitigate risk and deter crime. After assessing a campus facility or office space, the CRO will provide safety recommendations that may pertain to access control, lighting, landscape design, office space layout and barriers.

Additional training materials, other resources and instructions related to overall campus safety are as follows:

  • During emergencies, to include situations in which you or others are being threatened, dial 9-1-1 or use any emergency blue light phone located throughout campus. If you are unable to call, text to 9-1-1 is available in San Diego and Imperial counties.
  • During non-emergencies and while on campus, call 619-594-1991 and select 1 to speak with a UPD police dispatcher.
  • SDSU Alerts are emergency notifications that SDSU sends to students, faculty and staff and other subscribers when responding to an active emergency or urgent situation.
  • Email the CRO [email protected] to schedule an in-person active shooter safety presentation or to request a C.P.T.E.D. assessment.
  • Download and use the SDSU Safe app (Apple and Android), which provides information about university support resources, university shuttles and more. You can report a tip or concerning behavior through your mobile device via SDSU Safe. Please note that tip-reporting features should only be used during non-urgent situations.
  • Update your contact information, to include your cell phone number, to ensure timely notice in the event of a campus alert. Instructions are available online, at Urgent.sdsu.edu.
  • University support services are ready when you need them.
