Xander Schauffele claims The Open

Former San Diego State men’s golfer Xander Schauffele captured his second major of the season, winning The Open Sunday afternoon at Royal Troon Golf Course in Troon, Scotland. Schauffele fired a 6-under 65 in today’s final round on the par-71, 7,385-yard course to finish at 9-under 275, two shots clear of co-runner-ups Justin Rose and Billy Horschel.

Schauffele, who also won the PGA Championship in May for his first major championship, now has nine career PGA Tour victories along with a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Schauffele is the first player with multiple majors in the same season since Brooks Koepka in 2018 and the 21st different player to ever win two majors in the same season.

According to golf stat guru Justin Ray, Schauffele is the first player to shoot 65 or lower in the final round to win a major twice in the same season. Jack Nicklaus is the only other golfer to accomplish the feat for his career.

In the four major appearances this season, Schauffele had two wins, and tied for seventh at the U.S. Open and came in eighth at The Masters. In 30 career majors, Schauffele now has two victories, two runner-ups, eight top-5s and 15 top-10s.

Schauffele opened his weekend with a 2-under 69 on Thursday, then followed with a 1-over 72 on Friday. Schauffele carded a 2-under 69 on Saturday before his 65 today.

Schauffele's nine PGA Tour victories have come at the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, 2017 Tour Championship, 2018 WGC-HSBC Champions, 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions, 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, 2022 Travelers Championship, 2022 Scottish Open, the 2024 PGA Championship and the 2024 Open. Schauffele also won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Schauffele entered The Open ranked third in official golf world rankings (OGWR) and second in the Data Golf Rankings. He’s also second in the FedEx Cup standings. 

A two-time PING All-West Region honoree, Schauffele received All-America recognition following a brilliant senior campaign at San Diego State in 2015, garnering third-team accolades from the both the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Golfweek.

In his three years on Montezuma Mesa, Schauffele amassed 21 top-10 finishes, 16 top-five performances and two individual titles before graduating with a degree in social science. He also owns the school record with a 71.50 career scoring average in 118 rounds played, as well as the program's single-season standard of 171 birdies set in 2014-15.
