SDSU fund to support projects that enhance global democracy
SDSU President de la Torre recently announced the micro-grant program, designed to fund student, faculty and staff activities fostering inclusive dialogue on global issues and promoting democratic engagement.
At San Diego State University, it is regularly referenced that there is a deeply held value in the collective role of making SDSU a community where every voice matters, where empathy guides our actions, and where civility is at the heart of our interactions.
In keeping with these values, SDSU President Adela de la Torre introduced the Presidential Global Democracy Fund. The initiative will support students, faculty, and staff in creating meaningful and inclusive conversations and interactions that foster community inclusion and support meaningful conversations around democracy, inclusion and free speech.
“I began this year reflecting on the mission of our institution, and my many conversations with students, faculty and staff. Through this program, I invite all of us to promote the importance of civility and empathy in our interactions and the importance of constructive civic engagement,” de la Torre said.
Aligned with the One SDSU Community program, the new fund will provide up to $5,000 per micro-grant to enable programming that brings together students, faculty, and staff for events, discussions and creative activities promoting respectful dialogue and diverse perspectives.
“Our community has a proud tradition of hosting events and programs that promote constructive dialogue, respect and caring leadership,” de la Torre said. “This fund will continue that legacy by supporting creative initiatives that further amplify our principles of community. Through these efforts, SDSU will continue to demonstrate that respectful and productive discourse – rather than divisive, dehumanizing rhetoric – can bridge divides and elevate our shared humanity.”
The fund prioritizes programs that promote healthy and respectful engagement across differences, ensuring that all voices are represented. Proposals will be reviewed beginning in October 2024 and must align with the SDSU Principles of Community and the goals of the One SDSU Community initiative.
“As we face a complex global landscape and prepare for the upcoming national elections, it is critical that our campus remains a space where ideas can be shared and heard," said Chris Manning, SDSU Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. “This fund and the numerous activities it will support are vital to ensuring that our campus community remains a beacon of democratic values, inclusion, and respectful dialogue."

Those who receive funds for activities are required to complete the President’s Fund Attestation Form and One SDSU Community training prior to the start of their program.
