SDSU ROTC hosts 9/11 Remembrance, unity mixer on Wednesday
The event hosted by the Military and Veterans Program falls on the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
San Diego State University ROTC’s detachments are inviting the community to the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives, their loved ones and the heroes who responded to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The annual ceremony begins at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, coinciding with the time of the attacks by al-Qaeda, at the flagpole on Campanile Walkway near Hepner Hall.
Following the ceremony, the Military and Veterans Program, in collaboration with OneSDSU, will host a unity mixer open to the community. The mixer takes place at the Lee and Frank Goldberg Courtyard in the Conrad Prebys Student Union from 10 a.m. to noon. Coffee and pastries will be served.
The day’s events aim to bring together SDSU’s military-connected students with their peers, fostering diverse perspectives and shared experiences in an inclusive setting, said Elisa East, director of the Military and Veterans Program.
East emphasized the significance of the event, recognizing it may evoke profound memories for veterans who served during that time. "It's definitely a reminder of what has happened .... the important thing is to focus on the great things that are ahead," she said.
East encourages all members of the SDSU community to attend, participate in the unity mixer, or visit the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center to learn more about how they can support and get involved with military-connected students.
