Los Angeles Wildfires: How to help impacted SDSU students
SDSU has created a fund to support students in crisis. Here’s how to donate.
The catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles County have devastated the lives of thousands including many in the San Diego State University community. More than 300 SDSU student families come from the most impacted areas.
In response, SDSU’s Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT) is working to provide essential resources, including housing support, gift cards for groceries and gas, and other necessities. Donations from the SDSU community are helping ECRT to continue and expand the assistance.
“Your generosity helps ensure that every student has the resources to continue their education without interruption,” said Caryl Montero-Adams, SDSU’s interim dean of students. “Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of SDSU students.”
How to donate
Donations of any amount will support impacted students through the Economic Crisis Response Team. Donations can be made online.
How students can get help
To request assistance for essential needs, contact the Economic Crisis Response Team in the Basic Needs Center at Calpulli Center: email [email protected] or complete the online form.
In addition, the Campus Assistance, Response, Evaluation, and Support (CARES) Team can help address any student need. CARES can also help students navigate resources and contact faculty. Email [email protected] or complete the online form.
Counseling & Psychological Services can be reached at 619-594-5220 and crisis support is available when the office is closed at the same number. Self-help options are available on demand on the C&PS website.
“This is exactly the kind of crisis situation that ECRT was created to address,” said Evie Baez, director of the Basic Needs Center. “We are already hearing from students who are turning to us for assistance with essential needs so that they can continue their education uninterrupted.”
Additional needs
In addition to emergency resources for students, donations may be used to assist impacted students with tuition and fees. Any funds raised above and beyond those used to address the impact of the wildfires may be distributed for general ECRT purposes.
