Construction is officially underway on the joint student housing project between Imperial Valley College and San Diego State University Imperial Valley.
On schedule to be completed by fall 2026, the joint student housing project will build 40 single- or double-occupancy rooms at SDSU Imperial Valley, Calexico. The student housing is planned to be available to students enrolled at SDSU Imperial Valley and Imperial Valley College.
“SDSU Imperial Valley is a core part of our SDSU community, and adding accessible student housing further demonstrates our commitment to supporting the needs and experiences of the students in this region,” said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. “We value our strong partnership with Imperial Valley College, and share a desire to create tangible opportunities to empower the Valley’s skilled workforce.”
“Our upcoming housing project will open new doors for new and current students, who are looking for affordable housing while also experiencing more campus life activities,” said Guillermina Gina Nuñez-Mchiri, SDSU Imperial Valley dean. “Our partnership will support the resiliency of our campus communities, who are eager to pursue higher education and are looking to establish their careers locally.”

“This innovative housing partnership builds on Imperial Valley College's commitment to addressing student housing insecurity through our existing student housing community,” said Lennor Johnson, IVC superintendent/president. “Many of our students currently commute long distances or face housing challenges that can derail their education. By expanding housing options near SDSU Imperial Valley’s campus, we're creating a seamless pathway for our students to continue their academic journey in the Imperial Valley – from IVC through their bachelor's degree – with stable, affordable housing supporting them every step of the way.”
The project builds on a series of investments in student support services, new programs, and expanded degree offerings at SDSU Imperial Valley, including the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, which was launched in fall 2024. In May 2022, SDSU Imperial Valley announced the creation of an accelerated pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
Additionally, the Sciences and Engineering Laboratories at SDSU Imperial Valley, Brawley, which is on schedule to be completed in fall 2025, is one part of the university's commitment to meeting both current and future geothermal energy sector demands.
