For 11 years, Aztec Nights has provided new students with opportunities to connect with one another in entertaining and inclusive on-campus settings.   Aztec Nights, which are spread throughout the first weeks of the semester, expands this year to include art, activism, casinos and video games. This year’s three new events are Casino Night on Sept. 7, Global Game-a-Thon on Sept. 14 and “I heART San Diego” on Sept. 20.
“‘I heART San Diego’ is an opportunity for our SDSU students to learn about local nonprofits and campus initiatives, explore issues that are important to them and work together as One SDSU Community to create and experience the way art and activism can come together to create positive social change,” said Tierney Harrison, a student life adviser in Student Life and Leadership.    This year’s slate of events kick off Aug. 23 with the decades-long tradition, Templo del Sol, during which new students are introduced to some of the most time-honored SDSU traditions, including the Fight Song and the “Hello Walk” through the arches of Hepner Hall.   On the same night, the university will also host the Back to State Bash, a night full of food, games, music and other activities open to all returning students at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union’s Goldberg Courtyard.    Fans of the Marvel Comic Universe can enjoy a special screening of the box office smash “Avengers: Endgame” on Aug. 25.   The following weekend, one of the highlights of Aztec Nights, Dragstravaganza, provides a space for all students to celebrate the LGBTQIA community in combination with the wonderful world of drag. That event is scheduled for Aug. 31 at Montezuma Hall in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
This year’s events are part of the university’s “First Five Weeks,” a new effort to develop coordinated program offerings during the first five weeks of the fall semester that address critical needs of students and focus on safety, diversity and inclusion, well-being and student success.
Activities during the first five weeks are divided into overarching themes:
  • Staying Safe -- Aug. 18-24
  • (I)dentity -- Aug. 25-31
  • Socializing @ State -- Sept. 1-7
  • Staying Healthy -- Sept. 8-14
  • Staying Successful -- Sept. 15-21
All Aztec Nights events are free for students with a valid RedID, and students can bring up to one guest older than 18 with a valid ID.
