SDSU Oaxaca Global Health Internship

Students gain hands-on experience alongside SDSU and CSU students each summer through a transformative global health learning experience in the vibrant and culturally-rich city of Oaxaca, Mexico. The SDSU Global Health Internship in Oaxaca program combines weekly clinical rotations and public health placements in Oaxaca City, with Spanish langauge courses, cultural activities and excursions and a companion SDSU course, which allows SDSU students to gain a deeper understanding of the broader socio-cultural and historical context of Oaxaca, and the US-Mexico border region.

Exploring Community-based Peace-building in Colombia
In June 2023, Dr. Bartel led a group of SDSU students to Cali, Colombia to explore community-based peace-building in action. Working with Javeriana University's Research Group on Social Movements, Intercultural Dialogue and Peacebuilding, students visited indigenous communities in rural Colombia where demobilized camps for former guerrilla combatants are based, met with Afro-Colombian victims' collectives, former guerrilla combatants, scholars and social movements for peace, as well as government officials.
